And I am absolutely honored. It was such a pleasure to read an advanced copy of Camille Dungy’s debut memoir SOIL. I have Yahdon Israel to thank, Dungy’s editor at Simon & Schuster. He invited me to join his Literary Swag Book Club, and Dungy’s SOIL was the first book we read while I was in the group. I loved it immediately. As I say in the blurb (and in the essay I wrote about the book for The Millions), it helped me after my mother’s passing, and I can’t recommend it enough. My blurb and others are part of the promotion for the paperback edition, which just came out. Here’s a link if you’re interested. I’ll be thinking about her Prairie Project, as well as my mom’s own version of the same, until I’m able to build my own garden with my kids. I’ve learned so much from being outdoors with family, about tradition and how often it blends with wild habitat and the natural world, but there is still so much to gain and, I hope, room to grow.
